Airalo Overview

Airalo is the world's largest eSIM marketplace, serving 10+ million users across 200+ countries. Founded in 2019, it offers a wide range of Japan eSIM plans through multiple carriers.

Japan Plans & Pricing

Airalo offers tiered Japan plans:

  • 1GB / 7 days: ~$4.50
  • 3GB / 30 days: ~$11
  • 5GB / 30 days: ~$16
  • 10GB / 30 days: ~$26
  • 20GB / 30 days: ~$42
  • Unlimited / 7 days: From ~$18

Pricing is competitive, especially for smaller data plans.

Network & Coverage

For detailed speed data, see our Japan eSIM Speed Test Results 2026. Airalo averaged 71 Mbps across our tests.

Airalo connects to KDDI au and SoftBank networks in Japan. This means:

  • Excellent coverage in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and all major cities
  • Good performance on most Shinkansen routes
  • May be weaker in very remote/rural areas compared to Docomo-based providers

Setup Experience

1. Download the Airalo app (iOS/Android)

2. Browse Japan plans and purchase

3. eSIM installs directly through the app — no QR code needed on newer phones

4. Clear step-by-step instructions with screenshots

The app experience is one of the best in the industry. Very beginner-friendly.

Pros

  • Wide range of plan sizes (1GB to unlimited)
  • Excellent app with easy installation
  • Top-up support (add data without buying a new plan)
  • Global coverage (use the same app for other countries)
  • 4.7/5 App Store rating
  • Promo codes frequently available

Cons

  • No NTT Docomo network (weaker in some rural areas)
  • Unlimited plans throttle after daily cap
  • No voice calls or SMS (data only)
  • Customer support can be slow during peak times

Who Should Choose Airalo?

  • Travelers who want a trusted, established provider
  • Those who value an easy app experience
  • Budget travelers who know exactly how much data they need
  • Multi-country travelers who want one app for all destinations

Real-World: Airalo on a 7-Day Tokyo–Osaka Trip

Here's what it actually looks like to use Airalo from landing to departure.

Night before (at home):

Opened the Airalo app, bought the 5GB / 30-day Japan plan for $16. The eSIM installed directly through the app in under 2 minutes — no QR code on iPhone 15. Kept the line turned off until landing.

Narita Airport, 2:30 PM:

Turned on the Japan eSIM line in Settings while taxiing. Full KDDI au signal before I cleared immigration. Google Maps loaded the Narita Express route immediately. Total time from touchdown to train platform: 45 minutes — no WiFi counter visit, no SIM card shop.

Tokyo, Days 1–4:

Consistent 40–80 Mbps across Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Akihabara. Used Google Maps constantly, Tabelog for restaurants, and posted to Instagram — no issues. Averaged ~600 MB/day with moderate use (no video streaming).

Shinkansen to Osaka, Day 5:

Signal dropped briefly in a few tunnels, reconnected within seconds. 10-minute video call worked fine at 15–25 Mbps. Not blazing, but perfectly usable.

Osaka & Kyoto, Days 5–7:

Dotonbori, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama — all solid signal, same as Tokyo. Total data used: 3.8 GB out of 5 GB over 7 days.

Verdict: 5GB was plenty for a week of active tourism without streaming. If you watch YouTube or TikTok daily, spring for 10GB or unlimited.
