5G in Japan: Fast But Limited

Japan's 5G network is fast where it exists — we measured 295 Mbps in central Shibuya. But "where it exists" is the key phrase. In 2026, 5G coverage is still mostly limited to dense urban areas.

Where 5G Works in Japan

Area5G Coverage4G Speed
Central Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara)Good40-80 Mbps
Central Osaka (Namba, Umeda)Good40-80 Mbps
Nagoya city centerModerate30-60 Mbps
Kyoto temples and tourist areasSpotty30-60 Mbps
Train stations (major)Some coverage30-50 Mbps
ShinkansenNo 5G30-50 Mbps
Rural areasNo 5G10-40 Mbps
AirportsSome coverage20-40 Mbps

Bottom line: You'll hit 5G maybe 30-40% of the time in Tokyo/Osaka. The rest is 4G LTE, which is still fast.

5G vs 4G: Does the Speed Difference Matter?

Activity4G Speed Needed5G Advantage
Google Maps1 MbpsNone — works identically
Messaging (LINE, WhatsApp)1 MbpsNone
Social media browsing5 MbpsMarginal — pages load 0.1s faster
Posting photos10 MbpsSlight — uploads faster
Video calls (Zoom)5 Mbps upNoticeable — smoother video
4K streaming50 MbpsYes — but hotel WiFi is better for this
Large file downloadsVariesYes — significant

For most travelers, 4G is more than fast enough. 5G is a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have.

Does Your Phone Support Japan's 5G?

Japan uses these 5G bands:

  • n77 (3.7 GHz) — KDDI au, SoftBank
  • n78 (3.7 GHz) — NTT Docomo, Rakuten
  • n79 (4.5 GHz) — NTT Docomo only
  • n257 (28 GHz) — mmWave, very limited
Most international phones support n77 and n78. n79 is Japan-specific and mainly found in Japanese-market phones. If your phone doesn't support n79, you'll miss some Docomo 5G towers but still get n77/n78 coverage.

Check: Settings → About Phone → look for supported bands, or search "[your phone model] 5G bands."

Should You Pay Extra for 5G?

No. Here's why:

1. Saily's 5G plans cost the same as their 4G plans — there's no premium

2. 4G LTE in Japan is 40-80 Mbps — faster than most home broadband

3. 5G coverage is spotty outside city centers

4. You'll use 5G only a fraction of your trip

Our recommendation: Get Saily if you want 5G (it's included free). Get Airalo or Ubigi if you don't care about 5G.
