Not All eSIMs Work in Rural Japan

In Tokyo and Osaka, every eSIM provider delivers solid performance. But step outside major cities โ€” onsen towns, mountain villages, coastal roads, island ferries โ€” and the gap between providers becomes enormous.

The difference is the network:

  • NTT Docomo = works almost everywhere in Japan (best rural)
  • KDDI au = good in cities and suburbs, weaker in deep rural
  • SoftBank = good in cities, drops frequently in countryside

The Clear Winner for Rural Japan

Ubigi on NTT Docomo โ†’

From our testing:

  • Stable 4G in Hokkaido's lavender fields (Furano/Biei)
  • 3G signal in Shiretoko Peninsula (Japan's wildest national park)
  • Fewest signal drops on the Shinkansen
  • Only reliable option for deep mountain onsen towns

For popular onsen (Hakone, Kinosaki, Beppu): Any eSIM works fine. For remote onsen (Kurokawa, Nyuto): Docomo-based (Ubigi) strongly recommended.

Preparation for Rural Travel

1. Download offline Google Maps for the entire region you're visiting

2. Download Google Translate Japanese offline pack

3. Screenshot key information โ€” hotel address in Japanese, bus schedules, emergency contacts

4. Get a Docomo-based eSIM if going off the beaten path โ†’ Ubigi

5. Carry a portable battery โ€” fewer charging opportunities in rural areas

If You're Staying in Cities + One Rural Day Trip

You don't need Docomo for your entire trip. Strategy:

  • Get Saily or Airalo for cities (faster, cheaper)
  • Download offline maps for the day trip area
  • Accept that you might have spotty signal for a few hours in the countryside

The 90% of your trip in cities will have excellent coverage. The one day in Hakone or Nikko will work fine even on au/SoftBank.
