"Unlimited" Doesn't Always Mean Unlimited

Some eSIM providers advertise "unlimited data" but throttle your speeds after a daily cap. Others give you genuinely unrestricted data. The difference matters.

Here's what you need to know before buying an unlimited plan for Japan.

The "Fair Use" Reality

Most unlimited plans have a fair-use policy with a daily high-speed cap:

  • 1-3 GB/day at full speed (40-295 Mbps depending on provider)
  • After the cap: speeds drop to 1-3 Mbps
  • Cap resets at midnight Japan time

At 3 Mbps, you can still:

  • Use Google Maps (yes)
  • Send messages on LINE/WhatsApp (yes)
  • Browse websites (slowly)
  • Post to social media (text only, photos very slow)
  • Stream video (no โ€” too slow for even 480p)
Bottom line: "Unlimited with throttling" is fine for navigation and messaging all day, but not for video streaming after the cap.

Who Actually Needs Unlimited?

You probably DON'T need unlimited if:

  • You mainly use maps, messaging, and occasional browsing
  • You use hotel WiFi for streaming and heavy tasks
  • Your trip is 7 days or less
  • Recommended: 3-5 GB plan ($8-16) saves significant money

You probably DO need unlimited if:

  • You stream music/podcasts all day while sightseeing
  • You make video calls regularly
  • You share data via hotspot with travel companions
  • You don't want to think about data at all
  • You're on a 2+ week trip with heavy daily use

For many travelers, a 10-20 GB fixed plan is cheaper than unlimited and provides more than enough data. The only advantage of unlimited is zero data anxiety.
