The Shinkansen Is Not Just a Train
It's one of the best travel experiences in the world. Trains that hit 320 km/h, arrive within seconds of the schedule, and are cleaner than most hotels. Here's everything you need to know.

Which Shinkansen Line Do You Need?
| Route | Line | Time | Price (one way) |
|-------|------|------|-----------------|
| Tokyo → Osaka | Tokaido (Nozomi) | 2h 15m | ~13,000 yen |
| Tokyo → Kyoto | Tokaido (Nozomi) | 2h 10m | ~13,000 yen |
| Tokyo → Hiroshima | Tokaido + Sanyo | 4h | ~18,000 yen |
| Tokyo → Sendai | Tohoku (Hayabusa) | 1h 30m | ~11,000 yen |
| Tokyo → Nagano | Hokuriku (Kagayaki) | 1h 20m | ~8,000 yen |
| Tokyo → Kanazawa | Hokuriku (Kagayaki) | 2h 30m | ~14,000 yen |
| Osaka → Hiroshima | Sanyo (Nozomi) | 1h 20m | ~10,000 yen |
| Osaka → Hakata/Fukuoka | Sanyo (Nozomi) | 2h 20m | ~15,000 yen |
Nozomi = fastest (skips most stops). Hikari = fast (a few more stops). Kodama = all stops.
Important: Nozomi and Mizuho are NOT covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Use Hikari instead (adds 20-30 min).

How to Buy Tickets
Option 1: Ticket Machine (Easiest)
Green ticket machines at major JR stations. Available in English. Select your route, date, seat type, and pay. Takes 3-5 minutes.
Option 2: SmartEX App
Book from your phone, even before you arrive in Japan. Register a credit card, reserve your seat, and use the QR code to enter the gate. Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen only (Tokyo-Osaka-Hiroshima-Hakata).
Option 3: Station Counter
JR ticket offices ("Midori no Madoguchi") at major stations. Staff speak some English. Helpful for complex itineraries.
Option 4: Japan Rail Pass
If you're taking 3+ long Shinkansen rides, a JR Pass may save money. The 7-day pass (~50,000 yen) covers unlimited Hikari/Kodama rides. Do the math for your specific itinerary — it's not always worth it.

Reserved vs. Unreserved Seats
Reserved Seats (指定席)
- Guaranteed seat assignment
- Small extra fee (~500-1,000 yen)
- Required for Hayabusa, Kagayaki, and some others
- Recommended during peak seasons (Golden Week, Obon, New Year)
Unreserved Seats (自由席)
- First come, first served — line up at the platform
- Available on most Tokaido Shinkansen trains (cars 1-3)
- Fine for off-peak travel
- If the car is full, you stand (rare on weekdays)
Green Car (グリーン車)
- Japan's equivalent of business class
- Wider seats, more legroom, quieter
- ~40-50% more expensive
- Worth it for the Tokyo-Osaka run if you want to work

What to Expect on Board
Speed
You'll barely feel it. The ride is so smooth that a coin placed on the tray table stays upright at 300 km/h. The landscape blurs past the window, but inside it feels like floating.
The View
Window seat on the right side (heading from Tokyo to Osaka): Mt. Fuji on a clear day. Usually visible between Shin-Yokohama and Shizuoka, about 40 minutes into the ride. Morning trains with clear weather give the best chance.
Food
Buy an ekiben (train bento) at the station before boarding. Every major station has a dedicated ekiben area. Tokyo Station alone has 200+ varieties. Eating on the Shinkansen is not just acceptable — it's a tradition.
Pro tip: Get the bento BEFORE boarding. The onboard cart sells snacks and drinks but limited food. The cart doesn't pass through unreserved cars as often.
Quiet
The Shinkansen is remarkably quiet. Phone calls are expected to be taken in the vestibule (the area between cars). Laptop typing, reading, and quiet conversation are fine.
Power
Every seat has a power outlet (sometimes at your feet, sometimes between seats). Charge your phone for the entire ride.
---
Luggage
Regular suitcases: Overhead racks fit carry-on sized bags. Larger bags go in the space behind the last row of seats in each car — but these fill up fast.
Oversized luggage (over 160cm total): Since 2020, you must reserve a seat with oversized luggage space. It's free — just select it when booking. If you show up with a large suitcase without the reservation, staff may ask you to store it elsewhere.
Pro tip: Travel light if possible. A backpack and a small rolling bag make Shinkansen travel much easier than hauling a large suitcase.

Connectivity on the Shinkansen
This is where your eSIM matters. The Shinkansen experience includes:
- Checking arrival times and connections
- Navigating at unfamiliar stations during transfers
- Working on the 2+ hour ride (many travelers do)
- Looking up restaurants at your destination
JR Free WiFi: Gone
JR East and JR Central removed free WiFi from Shinkansen in 2024-2025. Don't count on train WiFi.
eSIM Performance by Provider (Our Test Data)
| Provider | Network | Avg Speed | Signal Drops |
|----------|---------|-----------|-------------|
| Ubigi | NTT Docomo | 48 Mbps | 2 brief |
| Saily | KDDI au | 42 Mbps | 3 brief |
| Airalo | KDDI au/SoftBank | 35 Mbps | 4 brief |
NTT Docomo-based providers (Ubigi) had the fewest drops and fastest speeds on the Shinkansen. All providers reconnected within seconds after tunnels.

Shinkansen Etiquette
- Recline your seat — It's fine, but do it gently
- Phone on silent — Calls in the vestibule only
- Clean up before you leave — Take your garbage with you
- Don't rush to board — Lines form orderly, the train waits
- Facing backwards is normal — Some seats face the opposite direction

Shinkansen vs. Flying
For Tokyo-Osaka (the most common route):
| | Shinkansen | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| Time (station to station) | 2h 15m | ~3h (with airport travel) |
| Price | 13,000 yen | 5,000-15,000 yen |
| Convenience | City center to city center | Airport to airport |
| Luggage | No check-in | Check-in required |
| Views | Mt. Fuji, countryside | Clouds |
| Delays | Almost never | Weather dependent |
The Shinkansen wins on convenience for any route under 4 hours. For Hiroshima or further, flying might save time.
