Don't Panic. Most eSIM Problems Have a Simple Fix.
You're in Japan, your eSIM isn't working, and you need internet NOW. This guide covers the most common issues and their fixes, in order of likelihood.

Problem 1: No Signal / "No Service"
This is the most common issue. Usually one of these fixes it:
Fix 1: Turn On Data Roaming (90% of cases)
This is the #1 reason eSIMs don't work in Japan. Even though you're using a Japan eSIM, your phone treats it as "roaming" and blocks data by default.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → [your Japan eSIM] → Data Roaming → ON
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [your Japan eSIM] → Roaming → ON
Why this is confusing: "Data Roaming" sounds like it will charge you international fees. It won't — your eSIM is a local Japan plan. The toggle just tells your phone to allow data on this SIM outside your "home" network.
Fix 2: Set as Data Line
Your phone might be trying to use your home SIM for data instead of the Japan eSIM.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select the Japan eSIM
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [Japan eSIM] → Use SIM → turn on Mobile data
Fix 3: Restart Your Phone
Seriously. A full restart (power off → wait 10 seconds → power on) fixes network registration issues more often than anything else.
Fix 4: Toggle Airplane Mode
Turn Airplane Mode ON → wait 10 seconds → turn OFF. This forces your phone to re-scan for networks.
Fix 5: Manual Network Selection
If automatic network selection isn't finding a network:
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → [Japan eSIM] → Network Selection → turn OFF Automatic → wait for the list → select KDDI, NTT DOCOMO, or SoftBank
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → [Japan eSIM] → Network operators → Search manually → select a network
Pick the network that matches your eSIM provider:
- Airalo → KDDI or SoftBank
- Saily → KDDI
- Ubigi → NTT DOCOMO
- Holafly → varies

Problem 2: eSIM Installed But Can't Activate
"eSIM Cannot Be Added" Error
- Carrier lock: Your phone may be locked to your home carrier. Contact them to unlock it. This is separate from your phone being "unlocked" for physical SIMs.
- eSIM limit reached: iPhones can store 8-10 eSIMs. Delete old ones: Settings → Cellular → [old eSIM] → Remove Cellular Plan
- Already installed once: Some eSIM plans can only be installed once per QR code. If you deleted it accidentally, contact your provider for a new QR code.
QR Code Won't Scan
- Make sure you have WiFi or mobile data to complete the activation
- Try in good lighting — camera needs to clearly read the QR code
- Use manual entry instead: enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code manually (your provider emailed these with the QR code)

Problem 3: Connected But Very Slow
Check Your Data Balance
You may have exceeded your data limit. Most plans throttle to 128 kbps after the limit instead of cutting off completely. Check your provider's app for remaining data.
If data is depleted:
- Buy a top-up through the provider's app (Airalo, Ubigi support this)
- Or buy a new eSIM plan — Compare plans →
Check for Throttling
Some "unlimited" plans have a daily high-speed cap (1-3 GB/day). After that, speeds drop to 1-3 Mbps. This usually resets at midnight Japan time.
Network Congestion
In extremely crowded areas (Shibuya Crossing at peak hours, festivals), all carriers slow down. This isn't your eSIM — it's the network being overloaded. Move a block away and speeds typically recover.
VPN Interference
If you're using a VPN, try disconnecting it. VPNs add latency and can conflict with some eSIM APNs.
iPhone: Also try turning off iCloud Private Relay (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Private Relay → OFF). This adds overhead.

Problem 4: Works Sometimes, Drops Connection
In Tunnels and Underground
Brief signal drops in train tunnels and deep underground stations are normal for all carriers. Your connection should restore within seconds of exiting.
In Rural Areas
If you're in rural Japan (Hokkaido, mountain areas, small islands) and using an au-based eSIM (Airalo, Saily), coverage may be spotty. NTT Docomo has the best rural coverage — consider Ubigi if you're spending time outside cities.
Between Cities on Trains
The Shinkansen maintains signal for most of the route, with brief drops in tunnels. Local trains may have more gaps depending on the line. This is normal.

Problem 5: Can't Make Phone Calls
Expected behavior. Most Japan eSIMs are data-only — no voice calls or SMS. For calls:
- Use LINE, WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Zoom over your data connection
- Your home SIM can still receive calls if it's active (dual SIM mode)
- For emergency calls: 110 (police) and 119 (ambulance) work on any network

Quick Diagnostic Checklist
Run through these in order:
- [ ] Is the Japan eSIM turned ON? (Settings → Cellular/SIMs)
- [ ] Is Data Roaming ON for the Japan eSIM?
- [ ] Is the Japan eSIM set as the Mobile Data line?
- [ ] Have you restarted your phone?
- [ ] Do you have data remaining on your plan?
- [ ] Have you tried Airplane Mode toggle?
- [ ] Have you tried manual network selection?

Prevention: Set Up Correctly Before You Fly
Most problems happen because of incorrect setup. Do this the night before:
1. Install the eSIM at home on WiFi
2. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM immediately
3. Don't activate it yet — keep it off until you land
4. Download offline Google Maps for Japan as backup
