eSIM Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

If you've never heard of eSIM before, that's fine. This guide uses plain language, no tech jargon, and tells you exactly what to tap on your phone.

The short version: An eSIM is like a digital SIM card. Instead of putting a tiny chip in your phone, you scan a code and your phone connects to the internet in Japan. That's it.

Should You Use eSIM or Pocket WiFi?

If You...Choose
Have an iPhone XS or newereSIM โ€” follow this guide
Have a newer Samsung or PixeleSIM โ€” follow this guide
Don't want to touch phone settingsPocket WiFi โ€” read this instead

Honest advice: If phone settings make you anxious, pocket WiFi is fine. It's more expensive ($35-70/week vs $13) but requires zero phone configuration โ€” you just connect to a WiFi network.

The Simplest eSIM: Airalo App

Airalo has the easiest app for people who aren't tech experts.

Step 1: Download the App

  • Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android)
  • Search for "Airalo"
  • Tap Get or Install
  • Open the app when it's done

Step 2: Find Japan Plans

  • Tap the search icon
  • Type "Japan"
  • You'll see a list of plans with prices

Step 3: Pick a Plan

  • For a 7-day trip: tap "5 GB - 30 Days - $16"
  • Tap "Buy Now"
  • Pay with your credit card or Apple Pay

Step 4: Install the eSIM

  • After purchase, tap "Install"
  • The app does everything automatically
  • You'll see a message saying "eSIM installed"
  • Don't turn it on yet โ€” wait until you land in Japan

Step 5: When You Land in Japan

  • Open Settings on your phone
  • Tap Cellular (iPhone) or Network (Android)
  • Find the new eSIM line and turn it on
  • Turn on Data Roaming for that line
  • Wait 30 seconds โ€” you should see signal bars
That's it. You have internet in Japan.

โ†’ Restart your phone

"Can't install eSIM":

โ†’ Your phone might be too old. Check: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Add eSIM. If this option doesn't exist, your phone doesn't support eSIM.
