The #1 Question About eSIM

"If I install a Japan eSIM, what happens to my regular phone number?"

Nothing. You keep it. That's the whole point of dual SIM โ€” your phone runs two SIMs simultaneously. Your home number stays active for calls and texts while the Japan eSIM handles data.

---

How It Works

Your phone has two SIM slots (one physical + one eSIM, or two eSIMs):

SIMRoleWhat It Does
Primary (home SIM)Calls + SMSReceives calls, texts, 2FA codes
Secondary (Japan eSIM)DataInternet, maps, apps, everything online

You don't need to choose one or the other. Both work at the same time.

Setup on iPhone

1. Your home SIM is already in your phone (physical SIM or eSIM)

2. Install the Japan eSIM: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Add eSIM โ†’ scan QR code

3. Label it "Japan Travel"

4. When prompted:

- Default line for calls: Keep your home SIM

- Default line for data: Select Japan eSIM

5. Done. Calls go through your home number, data goes through Japan eSIM.

To switch later: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Cellular Data โ†’ pick which SIM to use for data.

Common Questions

Will I get charged roaming on my home SIM?

Only if your home SIM uses data. Turn off mobile data for your home SIM line and make sure the Japan eSIM is set as the data line. Your home SIM will still receive calls and texts without roaming charges (receiving calls may have a small fee depending on your carrier โ€” check before you go).

Can I receive 2FA codes?

Yes. SMS-based 2FA codes go through your home SIM, which stays active. This is actually one of the biggest advantages of dual SIM over physical SIM swap.

What about WhatsApp/LINE?

These apps use data (your Japan eSIM), not your phone number. They work fine with any data connection. Your WhatsApp number doesn't change.

Can I make local calls in Japan?

Most Japan eSIMs are data-only โ€” no voice calls or SMS. For local calls:

  • Use LINE, WhatsApp, or FaceTime over data (free)
  • Use Skype to call Japanese landlines (very cheap)
  • Emergency calls (110/119) work regardless of SIM

Does it drain more battery?

Slightly. Running two SIMs uses ~5-10% more battery per day. Not significant if you carry a portable battery (which you should in Japan anyway).

Why This Matters for Japan Travel

Without dual SIM, swapping your physical SIM means:

  • No incoming calls from home
  • No SMS (including 2FA/bank codes)
  • Risk of losing the tiny SIM card
  • Swap back at the airport before departure

With dual SIM + eSIM:

  • Keep your home number active the entire trip
  • Receive 2FA codes for banking/apps
  • No physical SIM to manage
  • Nothing to swap when you get home
