What Is an eSIM? Complete Guide for Travelers

What Is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your smartphone. Unlike a traditional physical SIM card that you insert into a tray, an eSIM is activated by downloading a cellular plan — usually by scanning a QR code.

How Does an eSIM Work?

1. Purchase a plan from an eSIM provider (online or through their app)

2. Receive a QR code via email or in the app

3. Scan the QR code in your phone's settings

4. Activate the plan — either immediately or when you arrive at your destination

5. Connect to the local network and start using data

The entire process takes about 5 minutes.
