How to Set Up eSIM on Android for Japan Travel

Before You Start

Check that your Android phone supports eSIM:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S20+, Galaxy Z Flip/Fold, Galaxy A54+
  • Google: Pixel 3 and newer
  • Others: Select models from OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi

Your phone should be carrier-unlocked and connected to WiFi.

Step-by-Step Setup

Samsung Galaxy

1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager

2. Tap Add eSIM

3. Choose Scan QR code from service provider

4. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider

5. Follow the prompts to download and activate the plan

6. Label it "Japan eSIM" for easy identification

Google Pixel

1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs

2. Tap Add (+ icon)

3. Choose Download a SIM instead?

4. Scan the QR code

5. Confirm and wait for the profile to download

6. Set as your data SIM when ready

Other Android Phones

The general path is: Settings > Network > SIM cards > Add eSIM

The exact menu varies by manufacturer, but the QR code scanning process is universal.

Important Settings

Enable Data Roaming

After installing the eSIM, make sure roaming is enabled:

Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming > On

This is required for travel eSIM plans to work.

Select the Right Data SIM

Make sure your Japan eSIM is set as the active data SIM: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Mobile Data > [Japan eSIM]

Troubleshooting

No network connection in Japan?

1. Toggle Airplane Mode on and off

2. Restart your phone

3. Verify Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM

4. Try manual network selection: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Search Manually

QR code won't scan?

  • Ensure you're connected to WiFi
  • Try entering the SM-DP+ address manually (available from your provider)
"Unable to add eSIM" error?
  • Check if your phone is carrier-locked
  • Some older Android versions have eSIM bugs — update to the latest OS
