How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone for Japan Travel

·3 min read·Updated Apr 1, 2026

Before You Start

Make sure your iPhone supports eSIM:

  • iPhone XS, XR, or newer
  • Running iOS 16 or later (recommended)
  • Not carrier-locked (contact your carrier if unsure)

You'll also need a WiFi connection to download the eSIM profile.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Purchase an eSIM Plan

Choose a Japan eSIM plan from a provider like Airalo, Ubigi, or Saily. After purchase, you'll receive a QR code — either via email or in the provider's app.

Step 2: Open iPhone Settings

Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).

Step 3: Add eSIM

Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.

Choose Use QR Code and scan the QR code from your provider.

Step 4: Label Your Plan

iPhone will ask you to label the plan. We recommend naming it something clear like "Japan eSIM" to distinguish it from your regular plan.

Step 5: Set Data Line

When prompted, set the Japan eSIM as your default data line — or wait until you arrive in Japan to switch.

Step 6: Enable Data Roaming

Go to Settings > Cellular > [Your Japan eSIM] and enable Data Roaming. This is required for most travel eSIM plans.

Step 7: Arrive in Japan

When you land, make sure your Japan eSIM is selected for mobile data. Your phone should automatically connect to a Japanese network.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not connecting?

1. Toggle Airplane Mode on/off

2. Restart your iPhone

3. Check that Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM line

4. Try manually selecting a network: Settings > Cellular > [eSIM] > Network Selection > Manual

QR code not scanning?

  • Make sure you have a stable WiFi connection
  • Try entering the activation details manually (SM-DP+ address and activation code from your provider)
"Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added" error?
  • Your iPhone may be carrier-locked. Contact your carrier to unlock it
  • Some eSIM plans can only be installed once. Contact the provider if you've already scanned the QR code

Pro Tips

  • Install 1-2 days before your trip — This way you can troubleshoot at home if anything goes wrong
  • Don't delete the eSIM after your trip if you plan to visit Japan again — some providers allow you to reuse or top up existing plans
  • Take a screenshot of your QR code as backup before scanning
